The autonomous vehicle aka the robotaxi, has shifted from the testing phase to transportation phase in the United States. Robotaxis are now a daily fixture in many American cities, driven by technological advances, investment, and market competition.
Alphabet’s Waymo has established itself as the leader in the robotaxi space. Waymo operates robotaxis in more than 10 U.S. cities including major hubs like San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami and Denver. Waymo is currently providing over 500,000 rides every week with a goal of doubling that number by the end of the year.
Waymo is not the only robotaxi service available. Tesla has entered the market with a modified Model Y in parts of Texas and Florida. While the Tesla rollout has been more measured than Waymo, the company has vast manufacturing capabilities that may give it an edge going forward. The highly anticipated “Cybercab” is Tesla’s next step in the robotaxi race. Zoox, backed by Amazon, is a third robotaxi option that currently operates in Las Vegas and San Francisco.
Companies operating robotaxis must navigate a complex set of local laws while dealing with public concerns over safety. However, the robotaxi industry has logged millions and millions of miles already and a recent study shows that robotaxis actually had 68% fewer crashes than human drivers. The robotaxi industry is growing quickly across the United States and will undoubtedly change American transportation forever.
