Google will start replacing its iconic assistant starting September 4, 2026. The tech giant will begin phasing out Google Assistant across it’s mobile platform and replacing it entirely with Gemini its AI-powered successor.
Google Assistant was first launched in 2016 to compete with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. Over the last 10 years Google Assistant has become a leader in the smartphone, smart home, and wearable space.
What Changes for Users?
While the transition will take weeks, once the update hits a user’s device, Google Assistant will no longer be available. This change will effect Android smartphones and tablets, smartwatches, and connected headphones.
There are a few exceptions, for now, smart speakers, Google TV devices, and vehicles with Android Automotive will retain Google Assistant support. Migration plans for these hardware devices is expected in the future.
The Shift to AI
Gemini will automatically take over standard voice triggers, such as the “Hey Google” and holding the power button. Google has spent the past year working on Gemini to handle regular mobile tasks, smart home commands, and answer complex questions so the transition should be a positive one.
